The latest release of AutoCAD 2012 has been out for a while now and it continues to be one of the best packages for anyone in the CAD world. But what about all those other talented competitors? In this article we will compare and contrast two popular free CAD software packages: LibreCAD and SketchUp. Which one is better is up to you, but we've done our research and can give you some metrics on which to judge them. For starters, let's get a look at the two programs. There are two downloads out there to choose from: one is the source-based version and the other is a precompiled release. I chose to download and test out the precompiled version and will comment on how seamless (or not) it was to install and get up and running. LibreCAD v2.1.5 (by TurboPeer, Inc.) - Precompiled for Windows Operating System SketchUp v8 - Precompiled for Windows Operating System LibreCAD v2. 0.4 (by TurboPeer, Inc.) - Source Compiled for Windows Operating System SketchUp v8 - Source Compiled for Windows Operating System It's obvious that the precompiled version of SketchUp runs a little smoother and has a bit more functionality. But, there are a few drawbacks to it. For starters, the precompiled version of SketchUp does not work on 64-bit operating systems. It works on 32-bit systems but is oddly limited with options. In addition, the actual download is a whopping 5.07MB size - almost double that of LibreCAD. In the end though, it does come down to personal preference and there are other factors that you need to consider when choosing a CAD application. One is the cost of the tool itself. It is no secret that SketchUp costs less than LibreCAD, but it takes more time to learn how to use SketchUp than LibreCAD. Another consideration is whether you want an open source or closed-source design tool for your needs. The good news is that both companies are working hard to continue their development of their respective products and I predict they will both be around for awhile. But for now, if I had to choose one of them, my vote would have to go to LibreCAD.
